Battery Charging Has
Changed! |
|
Battery
Tenders & Chargers can be a cost effective approach to battery
maintenance. Chargers are not inexpensive, but neither are
batteries. A battery that is properly maintained will deliver more
years of service. The track record over the past ten years shows that
it is not uncommon for consumers, who were using Battery Tenders &
Chargers, to double, and in some cases - triple the useful life of
their batteries. |
|
All
Battery Tender® battery chargers are designed to fully charge and
maintain a wide range of styles including lead acid, AGM and Gel
batteries. Tenders manage batteries in ways that
avoid the potential damaging effects that can be caused by most
trickle chargers. All Battery Tender® battery chargers have the five
following characteristics: |
|
Characteristics of All Battery Tenders: |
Key Benefits: |
-
Fully
Automatic:
At the end of the regular charging cycle, every Battery Tender
automatically switches its output voltage to a safe, storage or float
level that eliminates the need to constantly check on the conditions of
the battery.
-
Full Output Power at Low AC Line Conditions:
Battery Tender chargers will deliver full output power with input AC
line voltages as low as 90 VAC. (Excluding chargers with output
current of 2 amps or less.)
-
Zero
to Minimal Current Draw from Batteries:
When the AC power is disconnected, most Battery Tender chargers draw
zero current from the battery. A few of the higher power models
draw less than 1 milliamp from the battery.
-
Compact, Lightweight Construction:
At any given power level, Battery Tender chargers offer some of the
highest charging power density in the industry.
-
Visual Indication of Charge State: Every Battery Tender
charger has some combination of colored lights to indicate the progress
of charging.
|
-
Battery Tenders are compact, and have lightweight construction.
-
Battery Tenders are microprocessor controlled and fully automatic.
-
Most Battery Tenders
have temperature
compensation to ensure optimum charge voltage according
to ambient temperature.
-
Automatically monitors battery and switches from charging to storage
mode, and provides a visual indication of the charge state.
-
Battery Tenders maintain the charge at the optimum float voltage to
virtually eliminate destructive sulfation.
-
The use of Battery Tenders extends battery life.
-
Battery Tender chargers are equipped with a variety of safety
features including reverse polarity protection and continuous short
circuit protection.
-
Spark free operation.
-
Interconnection options include: alligator clips,
quick disconnect fused
ring terminals, and cigarette lighter adapters.
-
Battery Tenders are available in a variety of models for various
applications.
-
Every Battery Tender has a warranty, ranging from 1 to 10 years.

New highly
efficient Gel and AGM batteries require more efficient charging techniques
and so battery charging has become a science. Battery technology
has changed at a very rapid pace, and virtually every battery
manufacturer has been pressured by end users to develop more power and
capacity from a smaller package, thus, the necessity for new charging
methods.
The
diligent work of Deltran engineers over the past ten years, working with
the engineering departments from nearly every major lead acid battery
manufacturer in the world, developed the most advanced battery chargers
available - The Super Smart Battery Tender.
Battery
Tender® battery chargers are equipped with a variety of safety and
interconnect options, not available on all models. Safety options
include: spark free operation, reverse polarity protection and
continuous short circuit protection. Interconnection options include: alligator clips,
quick disconnect fused
ring terminals, and cigarette lighter adapters. A variety of
AC input power options are available. |

Battery Tenders Versus
Trickle Chargers: |
|
Although
trickle chargers often appear to be a better economic choice for the
typical consumer, trickle chargers don't have the advantage of
sophisticated electronic control. The Battery Tender® Plus
battery charger is able to perform complex switching functions
because its electronic circuitry is controlled by an onboard
microprocessor. The Battery Tender® will automatically switch
between bulk charge mode and float charge mode as needed by the
battery. The output level of the Battery Tender® during float
mode is well below the gassing voltage of a lead acid battery.
After the bulk charge mode, the battery is "topped off" and while in
float mode, any detrimental effects due to gassing are minimized.
The output level of a trickle charger can rise above 15
VDC,
even to 16 VDC depending upon the trickle charger type. If the
battery is connected to this high level of voltage for a period of
time, even less than a day, extreme damage can be done to the
battery. |
|
Battery Tenders Versus
Other Automatic Chargers: |
|
Many
automatic battery chargers turn off when the battery voltage rises
or the charge current falls to a preset level. Then, after a
period of time, when the battery self discharge characteristics have
reduced its terminal voltage significantly, sometimes to the point
where the battery has lost almost 90% of its stored charge, the
charger will turn on and recharge the battery. This type of
cycling will dramatically reduce battery life. The Battery
Tender® Plus charger does not turn off, instead, it remains on and
switches from bulk charge mode to a safe float voltage level that
keeps the battery charged and yet does not do any harm to the
battery or cause any reduction in its useful life. |

Status
Indicator Lights: |
-
RED
- When the red light is on, the battery charger is in the process of fully charging the battery. In order to properly charge large capacity batteries, the charger may remain in this mode for several hours.
-
GREEN
FLASHING
- When the green light is flashing, and the red light is on, the battery is greater than 80% charged and may be removed from the charger and used if necessary. Leave the battery on charge until the green light is solid whenever possible. Once the green light begins to flash, it will remain flashing until either the battery charger output current drops below 0.1 amp, or until 6 hours has elapsed.
-
GREEN
-
When the green light is lit, the battery charger is in the storage mode of charge. In this mode, the charger will maintain the battery at full charge.

Output Cable
Connections: |
|
The
battery charger DC output cable has a molded, quick disconnect plug.
The ring terminal, alligator clip, and cigarette adapter output
cable accessories all contain the mating plug. |
